What is Canada Jade?

Canada jade is a nephrite jade that consists of calcium- and magnesium-rich amphibole mineral actinolite with a chemical formula of : Ca2Mg5(OH)2(Si4O11)2. Canada jade has the same mineral composition as hetian-yu, the most well-known nephrite jade in China.

According to some documents, jade deposits in BC were first identified by Chinese settlers in 1886 when passing through Victoria for the gold fields along the Fraser River and the Dewdney Trail from Hope to Kootenays hunting for gold, when jade was considered worthless by European miners. There was a document also mentioned that Cixi, the powerful Queen of Qing Dynasty loved Yi-Qi made from Canadian green jade.

Then in 1930s, European miners found large jade boulders from BC gold mines, but did not pay much attention about it.

Mr. Larry Owen and Mr. Gary Gallelli, both came from California, found jade when they hunted for gold in 1972, and they started their jade mining business (Loex Jades Ltd.). That was the start of commercial mining of Canada jade.
